MLM is the activity of promoting a company's products or services within networks. A network can be a family, or a group of friends, but a network may also be a group of people sharing a common belief, or who frequent the same websites. So why is MLM usually limited to friends, family and work collegues and why is the Web an ideal place to do MLM?

Traditionally Network Marketers would begin by telling friends and family about their company's products or services and educating their family and social circle about the business opportunity that they can offer. For many people this may seem like the extent of their 'network', which is why many individuals would run out of warm market prospects and then resort to purchasing leads. Anyone who has spent any amount of time cold calling purchased leads will know that this can be a disheartening process that rarely leads to positive results.

So why is it that prospecting within the warm market yields far better results than prospecting in the cold market? Well, an individual is unlikely to do business with you in any capacity unless they feel they know you, like you and can trust you. If you are discussing your products or opportunity with someone who already knows, likes and trusts you then the hardest part is already done! If you believe in what you are promoting and have no intention of abusing that trust then you will see far better results for your efforts.

Lets consider how the Internet might help you in building relationships and developing your warm market. There are people all over the Internet who share common interests with you and would be interested in learning more about you and your Network Marketing business. That does not mean that you have to prospect everyone, but you can be open and honest about why you started your business and what you hope it will enable you to achieve. If someone can see you are passionate then they are likely to ask you more about your business. If someone shares the same goals and dreams as you, but has not found a vehicle to help them to achieve their ambitions then I'm sure you will agree that they are very likely to ask you to tell them more!

If you want to network with people who share your interests and goals then forums and blogs are a good place to hang out. Also, sites such as Facebook and Myspace have groups specifically for people with common interests. If you want to build relationships then contribute on blogs and in forums and interact with groups on social networking sites. Remember that you intention is not to prospect everyone. You intention is to network and build relationships and explain your business and products to those who ask.
